Goal setting can be a daunting task. I have to confess it use to be for me! When I was younger, I hated even thinking of sitting down to write out my goals. Later in life I realized it wasn’t the goal setting I disliked, it was the fact that I did not know how to set goals. I would sit there staring blankly at my paper. However, as I begin to study and learn how to set goals, it became fun and something I greatly enjoy.

I don’t want you to be like me and let the fear of goal setting get in the way of moving you forward to reach your desires. I want to walk you through:

  1. Why we need to set goals.
  2. How to set goals.
  3. How to create a battle plan to help you stick to your goals.
  4. Give you an opportunity to plan and set goals for 2019.

So let’s get started!

Why Do We Need To Set Goals?

Goals help us have purpose. They keep us focused on what we deem important. Lastly, they help us move forward with intentionality. If we don’t have goals then we are more likely to waste time, energy, and money.

Setting goals can help us if we allow them to. Well written and planned goals help us stay focused on what is most important to us. We tend to achieve more and stay more motivated. If we create action steps to help guide our goals we will begin to see we ARE capable of getting results.

How To Set Goals.

I want to give you 5 steps that will help you in creating goals for yourself.

  1. Write out the major AREAS OR CATEGORIES in your life. (faith, relationships, finances, health, marriage, professional, and the list goes on depending on the person)
  2. Under each category pick a FOCUS WORD to help focus all your goals in that area/category. You can pick a focus word for each category (I do this) or you can pick one word for all areas/categories for the year.
  3. Then WRITE OUT YOUR GOALS for each area/catergory according to your focus word. Here is an example:

Area: Finanaces

Focus Word: Grow

Goal(s): 1. Read 3 books to increase or grow in my knowledge of how to save more money and stick to a budget.  2. Increase (grow) my savings.

 4. If you are new to goal setting start small so you can gain momentum.

5. Create ACTION STEPS to make your goals a reality. You must declare how you are going to accomplish each goal in bite-sized steps. Here’s an example:

Area: Health & Fitness

Focus Word: Change

Goal: 1. Run a marathon in 2019.

Action Steps: 1. Buy running shoes. 2. Set a time to run everyday. 3. Ask _________ to keep me accountable.

Just make sure your action steps are not too large that you set yourself up for failure.

How To Create A Battle Plan To Help You Stick To Your Goals.

This is where the rubber meets the road and you show those goals what you are made of. Here are five ways to successfully achieve your goals.

  1. Make sure your create “baby” action steps based off your focus word. Your focus word is your driving force.
  2. Your goals must be written down and put in a place you view often.
  3. When you start to lose focus and get discouraged, revisit your goals. Here’s why…1. It will remind you what you decided was important and what you are trying to accomplish. 2. It allows you to reevaluate your action steps, making sure they are simple, easy, focused steps.
  4. Share your goals with someone! This is very important because the accountability and encouragement will help spur you on to the finish line.
  5. Commit your goals to God. Ask Him to help you achieve your goals and ask for His guidance as to what you should strive after. THIS IS THIS MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF GOAL PLANNING!! I want my goals to reflect His heart!
