This past August (2017), my family and I became fosters for a nonprofit charity Doodle Rescue. You may be thinking “What in the world kind of charity is that?”. Well, it’s a dog rescue, based in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, that focuses it’s energy on rescuing dogs that are doodles (any dog breed bred with a poodle). I will give you some examples of the types of dogs they rescue. . . goldendoodles, labradoodles, sheepadoodles, cuteadoodles (ok, I made that one up) but you get the idea. These dogs are found in shelters, on the side of the road, puppy mills, breeder surrender, or owner surrender. Whatever the case may be this rescue comes along side the dog and takes ownership by providing a safe and loving environment.

They depend on foster homes to care for each dog, nursing it back to health and providing for the dog’s everyday needs. Fosters are a huge and important part of the rescue’s mission. The foster’s job includes, taking the dog to vet appointments, teaching them what every good dog needs to know, and to make sure their wounds (physical or emotional) heal if necessary. It is an honor and privilege to take these dogs in and care for their needs.

I want you to see what our life has been like the past months on our “foster family journey”. It’s been a family affair, our entire family has helped these precious dogs learn to thrive so they can settle in with their “fur”ever home. (That part is a tear jerker, by the way)

I will share our journey over the course of six days, sharing all six dogs we have had the privilege to know and love. I hope you’ll join me. . .but first to give you the details of how it all began.

Our time with this rescue started when a friend told me about the work they were doing and she knew we LOVED doodles. (Any dog for that matter!!) I hurriedly looked them up on Facebook and found their website, I filled out the foster application immediately. After filling out the application we waited for a response. (Which felt like forever.) I was worried they would not pick us because we have children under the age of ten, but I (being the persistent person that I am) emailed the rescue giving them reasons why I felt like we’d be a good foster family. I guess my persistence helped because we were contacted about a dog who was sitting in a shelter in Dallas that needed to be picked up. We were THRILLED we got a “yes”!

After we received the green light we got busy getting our house set up and ready for a very young foster puppy. At that point, we had not had a puppy in a VERY long time since our dog was 12 years old. We quickly shifted our thoughts to puppy prep. Our kids were besides themselves, can you tell?

We were counting down the days. . . then the day came to go pick her up. . .
